SHILLONG: Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh aims to move the state towards organic farming and has assured to initiate steps to achieve organic farming in the state.
It was on Friday that Lyngdoh along with his cabinet colleague, who is also the local MLA of Lawsohtun, Hamlet Dohling visited the organic farm at Lawsohtun. The ministers were accompanied by officials from the department. It may be mentioned that the president of Lawsohtun Farmers’ Association, Lambok Marbaniang complained of water scarcity and yearned for a proper irrigation system. Marbaniang complained that farmers are also exploited by middle men at Iewduh market.
With the organic produce not finding in any market in the state, Lyngdoh said the government will find ways and means to market the organic products besides imparting training on packaging and labeling of the products for a more presentable look.
It may be recalled that then Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Radha Mohan Singh paid a visit to the Lawsohtun organic farm last year.
However, Lyngdoh expressed concern that the plight of the organic farmers was not addressed.
Meanwhile, Dohling indicated that the farm land needs better farm machineries and spoke about the construction of a check dam which be examined buy him.
