Guidelines issued for preparedness of flood

NONGPOH: The Additional Deputy Commissioner & CEO (DDMA) Ri Bhoi District highlighted the guidelines of Do’s and Don’ts issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for preparedness on likely situations of floods and urban flooding in the district.
In a statement issued on Friday, the additional DC appealed the general public to follow up the guidelines such as ignoring rumours, to stay calm and not to panic, people should keep their mobile phones charged for any emergency communication, they should listen to radio, TV and newspapers for weather updates, to ensure safety place and untied  their cattle, any documents and valuables should keep in water proof bags, people must identify the safe routes to nearest shelter and evacuate immediately to safe places when directed by the government officials, furthermore, people should also store enough ready –to- eat food and water and also should prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival and must be aware of flash flood areas such as canals, streams, drainage channels.
He also mentioned some of the guidelines to be followed during flood like avoiding of entering flood waters, to stay away from sewage lines, gutters, drains culverts, electric poles and fallen power lines, to avoid walking and driving in the flood waters and also to eat freshy cooked or dry food etc.
Furthermore, the guidelines also mentioned after flooding such as not to allow children to play in or near the flood waters,  watching out of broken electric poles, wires, sharp objects and debris, avoid entering deep, unknown waters : use with stick to check water levels,  take with safety food and safety water to free themselves from any contaminated diseases.
