SHILLONG: Shillong, known as the historical capital of North East India, might well become a Presidential retreat if the suggestion of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is considered. In his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said making Shillong a Presidential retreat will send a very strong message of inclusiveness and a message of importance towards the Northeast accorded by the central government.
According to Sangma, the President would spend at least two weeks in a year here in Shillong. Currently, there are two Presidential retreats in India — Retreat Building in Shimla and the Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad. According to Sangma, the locations of the Presidential retreat one in the north and another in south, symbolise unity of the country and of the diverse cultures and people.
