SHILLONG: As part of the world wide Olympic Day celebration on June 23, Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) will organize the inter-college sports quiz competition on Tuesday and will also hold the second day edition of Shillong 10km city run on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, working president of MSOA, John Kharshiing said the celebration will be held on June 22 since June 23 falls on Sunday.
“It is a good sign to see that the colleges are taking interest in sports,” he said. The Inter-college quiz sports competition will be held at U Soso Tham Auditorium.
As for the Shillong 10Km run, he said almost 200 participants from Police and Paramilitary personnel have sent their entries to register their participation.
The winner will bag Rs 10,000, the first runner-up and second runner-up will take home Rs 7000 and Rs 5000 respectively. There will be 5 consolation prizes for Rs 1000 each.
Chairman of the Shillong 10 km run, Ian Lyngdoh said the first edition of Shillong 10km run turned out to be a success with the youth and decided to make it into an annual affair.About the Shillong 10 km run, the MSOA have talked with Athletics Federation of India to standardize the marathon race giving the official seal to the marathon race.
The State Sports Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh will flag off the run at 7 am from State Central Library.
For children under 16 years of age and for the elderly, a 3 km Run for Fun will also be organized on the same day.
On the other hand, the MSOA is making an effort to have the Shillong Run 10km recognized by the Athletics Federation of India.
The Shillong 10 km run will have 10 technical referees who will note down the time.The route for Shillong 10km will be from State Central Library-Wards Lake- Camel’s Back road- Chief Secretary’s residence road- Fourth Furlong- Demseiñiong – MES uphill road- all the way to Rynjah- Pohkseh- Nongthymmai- come back to GS road all the way to Barik – Civil Hospital and back to State Central Library.
The route for the 3 km “Run for Fun” is State Central Library – Khyndai Lad – round Deputy Commissioner’s office-Ward’ Lake- Governor’s House road-All India Radio – Civil Hospital road and back to State Central library.
