SHILLONG: The Health department is in a dilemma as on one hand it has shortage of doctors while on the other hand there are non- bonded doctors, who are willing to serve the state but are not appointed.
Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek on Wednesday admitted to the problem and said the creation of posts is taking a long time due to the delay on the part of Finance and other related departments.
He said there is 50% shortage of doctors in the state and this needs to be addressed.
However, doctors who are not sponsored by the state government are willing to work in the state but they are not appointed as preference is given to state-sponsored doctors.
“We are aware that there are non-bonded doctors who are willing to work while the state is facing shortage of doctors but it takes a long time for appointments”, he said.
He deplored that Rs 100 crore is spent yearly on the medial bills of the government employees and this has also added additional burden on the Health department.
