SHILLONG: Most of the youth from the North East prefer to join the hospitality and service sector as evident from the number of youth making a beeline to Job fairs, Stanley Jones, Chief Operating Officer of Don Bosco Tech Society said.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, he said that there is a placement-linked training programme which enables the youth to identify and get a job. There are orientation programmes carried out on how to face interviews.
Jones was at the two-day ‘Shillong Job Fair’ organised by Don Bosco Tech Society in partnership with Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS), at the campus of Don Bosco Technical School on Friday.
Commenting on the complaints of rising unemployment even as a number of job fairs are held annually, he said, “We have just one language training. We train 82,000-85,000 youths in a year and the success is based on strong industry partnership.”
Stating that the youth should be encouraged to go outside the North East for better opportunities, Jones said that state-based placement is also done such as in NEIGRIHMS.
Chief Guest Bhupesh Hajong, Executive Director, MSSDS, informed that the state government is helping the youth with programmes like Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya in different market driven and native trades.
Under this programme, the department has pledged to impart skill training to 7,000 young people with employment opportunities.
Hiring managers from more than 30 companies, including, Apollo Proton Hospital, Just Dial, Bharti AXA Life Insurance, Speed Wings Aviation, Safexpress, Jetex, Devyani International, Sodexo, ICICI Bank, Barbeque Nation and employers from Logistics, Tourism; Hospitality, IT enabled Services (ITeS), Health Care, Security, Aviation and Beauty & Wellness Sectors attended the job fair.
