NONGPOH: The headman of Baridua village, Ioannis Narleng has condemned the allegation made by Goldenstar Khongwar that he attacked him at Baridua village on June 19.
Talking to media persons at his residence along with the villagers, Narleng also said that the allegations made by Khongwar that he had refused to issue certificate to Khongwar’s son while addressing a press conference in Shillong, is totally baseless.
“I strongly condemn the statement of Khongwar stating that I attacked him, in fact, he is the one who came along with 30 people in four vehicles at my residence, apparently with the intention to kidnap and kill me. But their plan did not work, because my people (the villagers) were alerted on time and saved me,” Narleng said.
On the allegations that he denied a certificate to Khongwar’s son, Narleng said that bringing 30 people at his residence, with their faces masked and loaded with weapons, was not at all needed if he merely wanted a certificate.
Narrating the incident on June 19, two women informed that on seeing a group of around 30 people at Narleng’s residence, they became suspicious and informed the villagers.
The headman was allegedly attacked by Khongwar, who also tried to kidnap him, as he came out of his residence on hearing the women shout.
However, one of the women stopped Khongwar, and by then the villagers had gathered in protest against the attackers. They began throwing stones at the group of men and managed to chase them away leaving their vehicles behind. Khongwar was injured by the stones that were thrown by the angry villagers, thereby falling several times.
The headman also denied the allegation that he used a dao to attack Khongwar. He informed that Khongwar had desired to be a headman in the past and had even contested the elections, but the people did not vote for him. Following this, he even tried to divide the villagers but in vain.
Khongwar had also sent a group of people in Shillong to threaten Narleng saying that they would come and attack him and surprisingly he encountered them on June 19.
Narleng further urged the police to arrest Khongwar and his group for attacking him at his residence and punish him as per sections of law.
