Taxis, auto rickshaws in EKH to get stickers from July 1
SHILLONG: The SP’s Office, East Khasi Hills has informed that the issue of stickers with allotted numbers for the owners of local taxis and auto rickshaws will commence from July 1. The owners/representatives will have to collect the stickers from the SP’s office by August 30, failing which they will be charged a late fee of Rs 500. The owner will have to produce before the office particular documents which include the registration certificate, permit, insurance certificate, fitness certificate, trading license for non-tribal owners, professional and passenger tax certificate, M.L.M.T.U certificate, pollution certificate and EPIC/AADHAR card of the receiver of the sticker. The photocopies of aforementioned documents will need to be carried along with their original ones. After all documents are considered to be valid, a sticker will be issued which is to be pasted on the left side of the front windshield, the SP, EKH informed.
Pressure groups demand transfer of DTO
MAWKYRWAT: The South West Khasi Hills unit of the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) and Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) have met the Commissioner Secretary of Transport, Shillong and demanded immediate transfer of T Sangma, District Transport Officer (DTO), Mawkyrwat, as the officer was irregular in attending office. “The people of the district have to face many problems because of the irresponsibility of the DTO. Besides, the inability of the officer to understand or speak the local language has become a big problem to the locals,” President of HANM, South West Khasi Hills unit, Lambokstar Marwein said. Marwein said that it is due to these problems that HANM and HYC demanded to immediately transfer the officer. “We also demand that the government should give us a fulltime DTO who will be present in all working days and understands the local language,” Marwein said, adding that the Commissioner and Secretary has promised to look into the matter.
Committee to check environmental standards
SHILLONG: SK Sunn, Chairman, Committee on Environment of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly said that the committee will visit important rivers, industrial sites and hospitals to check whether standard environmental procedures are met. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said the committee has chalked out a plan to visit 2 important rivers, namely Simsang and Ganol. The committee will also visit the industrial areas in Umiam and cement factories to check how waste water is discharged. Member of the committee, HM Shangpliang said the committee will also check pollution by vehicles. “I have not seen the pollution testing unit of the Transport Department. It is sleeping and idle. Vehicles emit black fumes,” Shangpliang said. Moreover, concerns were raised over hospitals having incinerators in its premises. In addition to this, proper disposal of garbage will also be observed.
Workshop on Mathematics
SHILLONG: The State Council of Science, Technology and Environment, Meghalaya along with the Mathematics Department, Shillong College, will organise the State-Level Workshop on Mathematics for the Upper Primary school mathematics teachers at the Conference Hall, Shillong College from June 26 to 28. The programme aims to enhance the concept of mathematics among the target groups and make learning fun and interesting for the students. Ashutosh K Wazalwar, Head, Division of Educational Kits, NCERT, New Delhi, PB Lartang, Deputy Director, PERT, S Kharchandy, Associate Professor, Shillong College, and J Rivulet Gidon, Assistant Professor, Shillong College will be the resource persons in the workshop. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui will preside as the Chief Guest during the inaugural programme which will begin at 10 am on June 26.
Khasi folk song competition
SHILLONG: Hynñiewtrep Cultural and Welfare Organisation (HTCWO) will organise a khasi folk song competition called ‘Sur Tynrai’ which will be an open-to-all singing competition. The event will consist of two rounds, i.e. the qualifying round which will be carried out through video performances of participants and the final round which will be a live stage performance. Entry forms will be available at Mahari & Sons, Motphran from June 26 between 10 am to 7 pm. Participants will have to submit their entry forms by August 17 at the office of the HTCWO. The winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 75,000 along with a certificate and trophy. The second and third prize winners will be awarded Rs 50,000 and 25,000 respectively, with trophy and certificate.
