SHILLONG: Water Resources Minister Metbah Lyngdoh lamented that the North East despite being a natural resource sink lags behind in terms of social and economic development.
Speaking at the North East Conclave 2019, Transforming NE India through Science and Technology, organised by Institute of Bio Resources and Sustainable Development on Friday, Lyngdoh said that the region comprises of eight per cent of the geographical area and one third of country’s water resource.
“North East is a natural resource sink of the country and its endowment can contribute to the nation’s progress and accelerate the pace of development,” he said.
He suggested that in the fast paced world of technology and consumerism, head and heart should be in the right place so that the ecology becomes a springboard of economic transformation and lead in real progress.
Meanwhile, Director General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr Shekhar C Mande said that any socio-economic development of any society it wants to achieve, science and technology is one of the major traverses of that process.
The conclave was attended by eminent professors, research scholars and academicians.
