St Edmunds’ teachers protest termination of colleague’s service

SHILLONG: The teachers of St. Edmund’s College, Shillong and the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) on Monday launched an indefinite protested against the functioning of the College Governing Body over various issues.

Their demands include dissolution of the governing body, reinstatement of Professor Jeffreyson Wahlang besides bringing uniform service rules for the teachers.

Talking to reporters, president of the MCTA, St Edmunds college unit professor, Malcolm Tariang said that that the college has two post of teachers, the sanctioned post teachers paid by the government and the college post teachers under the management of the college

Lamenting that the latest rules for college post teachers 2018 is like a noose around their neck, he added that they had taken up the matter with the with the Governing body and there was no result despite assurances.

He also informed that one of the professors, Jeffreyson Wahlang was recently summoned and handed a letter which stated that he had been relieved of his services as the governing body had found his overall performance unsatisfactory.

Meanwhile, another professor and member of the MCTA, Rownea Langrai said that the Governing council were trying to follow a divide and rule policy as they have a sanctioned-post teachers and college-post teachers.

Pointing out that recently they brought out rules which are applicable to only college post teachers, Langrai said how could they have two separate sets of rules for governing teachers in the same institute.
