The Cabinet on Friday discussed in detail about the prevalent situation in Garo Hills arising out of floods.

Informing that the Meghalaya Government is seeking assistance from the Centre, the Home Minister informed that the State Government was also discussing if the state’s floods needed be declared as national disaster.

Terming the situation as grim, he said that the Government was expecting the water to recede but it was not receding while district administrations are doing their best to provide all the assistance to the people.

It is learnt that the State Government has also placed many boats in the affected areas.

Stating that the government would assess as to what led to floods of such a magnitude in Meghalaya, he also said that the Government was examining how several parts of Shillong city were flooded following the recent rains.
