TURA: To honour the heros of the Kargil War of 1999 and commemorate the celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the BSF in Garo Hills organised a marathon in the border town of Dalu in West Garo Hills on Wednesday morning.

The five km run for the public and the BSF personnel was flagged off by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vijay Kumar Thapliyal at Dalu at 6 AM.

A large number of civilians, particularly young school boys and girls, competed with the officers and jawans of the force with enthusiasm braving the torrential rains that lashed the region in the morning hours.

During the event DIG Thapliyal gave a brief talk on the history behind the Kargil War and the sacrifices made by the heroic Indian soldiers who in July 1999 successfully pushed back Pakistani intruders from the Kargil mountains during the 60 day war.

It was a momentous occasion for the participants of the marathon when they crossed the finish line at the historic war memorial  at Killapara village of Dalu- the site where brave BSF jawans held their post and fought to the last man against a large invading force during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence.

Meanwhile, at the BSF Sector Headquarters in Dobasipara, Tura, a tree plantation drive was undertaken by the force in collaboration with the Lions Club of Tura. As many as two hundred fruit bearing and medicinal trees were planted across the campus.
