NONGPOH: A committee was formed by the KSU, North Khasi Hills District unit, to fight against drug abuse.
The KSU led by its president Ferdynald Kharkamni met the youth leaders of various villages at Nongpoh on Friday. A meeting was called at the community hall of Nongpoh where it was unanimously decided to form a committee called All Nongpoh Area Anti-Drug Vigilance Committee which will be headed by Kharkamni as the chairman and Herroi Nongrum as general secretary beside members from several villages falling from Quinine to 20th Mile along NH-6.
Following the growing menace of drug abuse in Nongpoh, the union decided to call the meeting.
This new committee will ensure working hand in hand with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force of the Police and the District Administration to prevent and eradicate drugs amongst the youths of the District.
While raising concern over lack of actions against those involved in selling or consuming drugs, the youth leaders said that it useless to inform the police as the accused persons often get away.
Kharkamni said that this committee will be an independent body of the village leaders and will have no connection with the Union, but that the Union will only be a convener and will extend all possible help to this new body for the welfare and betterment of the youths and the society.
He urged the state government to follow the footsteps of Punjab Government in formulating new policies to prevent drug abuse.
The committee will also soon meet the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police to discuss and chalk out strategic plan to prevent and eradicate drugs in the District.
