Stray cow takes a stroll in IIT-B lecture hall
Mumbai: An undated video of a stray cow entering a lecture hall of the IIT-Bombay campus has gone viral, embarrassing the authorities at the country’s premier institute of learning. When contacted, an IIT-B spokesperson here on Monday said it is not clear from the video when or where the incident occurred and they are inquiring about it before issuing an official statement later today. Students in a first-floor lecture hall, nevertheless were stunned and amused to see a bewildered white cow with dark spots and medium horns suddenly gallivanting inside their classroom, entering from one side and walking out of the door on the other side. Some students, who were taking a test, even got up and tried to shoo away the cow, but she went on her chosen route calmly without any fuss. Students claim that the incident reportedly happened last Saturday when it was raining heavily in Mumbai and surroundings, and the cattle may have entered the building for shelter, but unwittingly strayed inside a lecture hall. The IIT-B campus, in lush green environs bordering the Powai Lake is known to harbour a variety of creatures. (IANS)


Man bites snake, lands in hospital
Etah (Uttar Pradesh): In a bizarre incident, a man from Etah district killed a snake by biting it repeatedly after the reptile attacked him. The incident took place in Asrauli village of Etah district on Sunday night. Raj Kumar was in an inebriated condition when a snake entered his house and bit him. “My son caught the snake, bit it and crunched it into pieces. His condition is serious. We are unable to afford the treatment expenses,” said his father Babu Ram. Doctors also confirmed that Raj Kumar’s condition is serious. “A patient came to me and said that he bit a snake. I thought the snake had bitten him. His condition is serious. He has been referred to another hospital,” said the doctor treating the man. Raj Kumar’s poor family cremated the snake after the incident to ‘atone’ for their son’s ‘sin’ of having killed the snake. (IANS)


MP tops country with 526 tigers
Bhopal: The All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018 on Monday revealed that Madhya Pradesh was the country’s “tiger state” with 526 of the big cats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released the All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018 and said the country has emerged as of one of the biggest and safest habitats for tigers in the world. The tiger population in the country has grown from 1,400 in 2014 to 2,977 in 2019, according to the report. MP had lost the coveted “tiger state” status to Karnataka in 2011. As per the 2018 report, Karnataka is a close second with 524 tigers, followed by Uttarakhand with 442. MP Chief Minister Kamal Nath congratulated the people of the state and those managing its national parks, reserves, institutes and others establishments involved in tiger protection. “Tigers are the state’s pride and this government will focus on enhancing their numbers further,” Nath said. While congratulating the people of MP, state BJP spokesperson Rajneesh Agarwal said it was alarming that 23 tigers had died in the state since October 1 last year. (PTI)


Man lynched in West Bengal
Alipurduar (WB): A person was lynched in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district by a mob on the suspicion of being a child-lifter, police said on Monday. The incident occurred at the Tasati tea garden on Sunday evening when locals saw a person moving suspiciously in the area, an officer of Falakata police station said. “Over 250 people had beaten up the man with fists and also kicked him. He was seriously injured when we recovered him from the mob,” the officer said. The man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was declared brought dead at the Birpara hospital, hospital sources said. “Seventeen people have been arrested in connection with the incident and they will be produced at the court on Monday. Further investigation is on,” district Superintendent of Police Nagendra Nath Tripathi said. The incident comes a week after two people were beaten up on suspicion of being child-lifters in separate incidents in the district last Sunday. (PTI)


Security tightened in Maoist areas
Bhubaneswar: Security has been tightened in Maoist-hit districts in south Odisha and state-run buses have stopped plying in the region in view of “martyrs’ week”, being observed by Maoists.The Odisha-Chhattisgarh border in Malkangiri district has been sealed and all police stations in Rayagada district have been put on high alert, senior police officers said on Monday. As a precautionary measure, the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) has suspended its bus services in south Odisha districts for a week since Sunday, an official of the OSRTC said. Buses operating in around 40 routes in the southern districts including Koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada have been stopped as Maoists began their martyrs’ week from Sunday till August 3, he said. Buses travelling to these districts from Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Bhanjanagar will remain suspended till August 3, Additional Transport Manager (ATM) of OSRTC in Malkangiri, Gagan Bihari Senapati said.
