JOWAI: The JHADC summer session held on Thursday unanimously approved the amendment to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District (Election to the Office of Dollois) Rules 2019.
This amendment to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District (Establishment of Elaka and Village and Election, Appointment, Powers, Functions and Jurisdiction of Dolloi/Sirdar and Waheh Shnong) Act, 2015, will make it mandatory for the candidates to mention criminal cases, if any, while filing nominations.
The amendment bill was introduced in the House by the Executive Member in-charge of political affairs of the JHADC, Finelywell Bareh last Thursday.
The bill was supposed to be discussed and considered for passing on Tuesday, however, due to the demise of State Assembly Speaker. Donkupar Roy, the session was postponed to Thursday.
The bill, which would definitely improve the election of Dollois, was tabled in the House following the directive issued by the Meghalaya High Court regarding the need to mention criminal cases in the nomination papers to contest the post of traditional heads.
