MAWKYRWAT:The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawkyrwat Circle on Tuesday expressed concern over the shortage of doctors at the Community Health Centre (CHC) as well as the slow progress of the work for the construction of the 100-bed hospital here, which is posing a problem to the people of Mawkyrwat area in particular and South West Khasi Hills district in general.
President of the KSU Mawkyrwat Circle, Elevenson Wanniang said, “We are very concerned for the health and welfare of the general public in Mawkyrwat area because of the shortage of doctors at the CHC Mawkyrwat in which there is only one doctor in a day. Our people especially those from the poor families from far-flung areas have to face lots of problem due to the shortage of doctors”.
“It is a shame that the only hospital at the district headquarter has only one doctor in a day whereas there are hundreds of patients. Where are all the doctors or do they just come to collect their salaries? Their duty is a matter of life and death for the people, why do they take it lightly? This is a failure of the health department,” Wanniang said.
Wanniang also said that the KSU had also sent a warning to the government that if any untoward incidents befell the local people who come for medical check-up or are admitted in wards, the Union would take strong action and the government has to take the responsibility.
The KSU requested the state government to speed up the work for the construction of the 100-bed Hospital at Mawkyrwat because it is the urgent need of the people of South West Khasi Hills as the CHC was very congested and patients have to sleep on the floor.
“It is painful to see our people from far-flung areas especially those from poor families have to sleep on the floor of the CHC because there is no place to sleep,” Wanniang said.
The Union urged upon the Health department to ensure that the long pending project is inaugurated soon so that it will be a blessing to the people of South West Khasi Hills district.
