NONGPOH: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited the Jirang C&RD Block office under Jirang Constituency and the villages in Ri Bhoi on Thursday as part of the initiative ‘Block to Block and Village Visit’.
The visit was significant considering the fact that Jirang constituency is one of the backward constituencies in the District, especially in terms of road connectivity and other aspects of development.
During the visit, the Chief Minister was accompanied by the local legislator of Jirang constituency, Sosthenes Sohtun, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah, Commissioner Secretary of Community and Rural Development, P Sampath Kumar among others.
The chief minister visited the implementation of National Rural Livelihood Mission at Nongsier village as well as a nursery of tree species at Umlakro village which was funded under the Community Led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP).
A meeting was also held at the premises of Jirang C&RD Block, in which a presentation on the ongoing implementation of various government schemes was presented by D Syiemiong, BDO of Jirang C&RD Block.
“The main objective of the field visit is to understand the real challenges faced by the villagers and not assigning plans sitting in the office” the chief minister said, adding that the previous government gave directives from the office on the implementation of various schemes that was not meted.
He also encouraged the ministers to meet the people in block and village level so that they get the actual sense of the challenges faced by the people in order to bring a change.
Meanwhile, Sosthenes Sohtun, local MLA of Jirang Constituency handed over the memorandum urging the intervention of chief minister on the daily problems faced by the local people, that included power failure, lack of proper road connectivity, scarcity of water supply, lack of mobile network facilities, et al.
Sohtun also reminded the chief minister about the urgent need to upgrade the existing Patharkhmah Administrative Unit to a Civil Sub Division as well as to expedite the construction of Model College in Western Ri Bhoi.
