SHILLONG: The Garo Students Union (GSU KHZ) Shillong discussed the issues prevailing in Mallangkona Huhuapara village under West Khasi Hills District, in the Assam Meghalaya border region with Home Minister James Sangma, president of GSU KHZ Mack Steve A. Sangma informed in a release issued here.
During the end of 2018, the inhabitants of the village informed the union that officials from Assam along with the local MLA of Boko Constituency Kamrup District came to the village and forcefully extracted the Chonga waterfall.
In connection with this, a public meeting was conducted wherein it was announced that Rs 1 crore had been sanctioned for the beautification and development of the waterfall.
The villagers protested against the announcement as the waterfall belonged to the state under the Nompak A’king land of Jonendro Bolchugre (Nokma) of the village. The villages further alleged that no action was taken till date on an incident where Assam police allegedly destroyed the culvert constructed under MGNRGS scheme at the waterfall area, besides the police also disrupted the daily lives of the populace, the president of the union informed.
