WB police arrests four from NE for drug possession
Kolkata: Two persons each from Nagaland and Manipur were detained by Kolkata Police on Friday, after huge quantity of banned drugs were seized from their possession in the city’s Maidan area. Acting on a tip-off, Kolkata Police intercepted a vehicle carrying them near Syed Baba Mazar ground under Maidan Police Station limits, and recovered 23.30 kg of party drug ‘Yaba’, a senior officer said. “There were nearly two lakhs pieces of ‘Yaba’ tablets inside the body panel of the vehicle and their luggage. The approximate value of these drugs in the local market is around Rs 80 lakh,” he said. Police are interrogating the four for more details, he added. (PTI)
Assam to auction 10-year government securities
Guwahati: The Assam government on Friday said it will sell 10-year tenure securities by auction to be conducted by the Reserve Bank of India. An official release said the government decided to sell the dated securities for an amount of Rs 700 crore with 10-year tenure by auction, to be conducted by the RBI at its Mumbai Office on August 27. All competitive bids may be submitted electronically on the Reserve Bank of India Core Banking Solution (E-Kuber) System between 10.30 am and 12 pm on the day of the auction, it said. Non-competitive bids may be submitted only electronically between 10.30 am and 11.30 am on the day of auction. The results will be displayed on the RBI website on August 27, the release added. (PTI)
Army rescue alleged thief from mob lynching in Nagaland
Kohima: The 164 Infantry Battalion of the Naga Army camped in Tuensang town on Friday rescued an alleged thief from mob lynching and handed over the accused to the police. According to a Defence Release, the locals of Kudei Village in Tuensang caught hold of Bendang Yimchunger, 36, a resident of Sotokhor village of the district, while he was allegedly carrying out robbery a a local pan shop in the early morning hours. The angry mob tied up the individual to an electric pole and started assaulting him. As per eyewitnesses, the accused had been caught earlier while stealing. Subedar Pemba Tamang of the 164 Infantry Battalion (TA) Naga Army camp, witnessed the commotion and tried to pacify the mob. He managed to disperse the mob and later contacted police. Local police officials lauded the effort of Subedar Pemba Tamang for showing maturity while handling an angry mob. The accused was taken to Tuensang police station. (UNI)
Arunachal to get 595 km roads under PMGSY-II
Itanagar: The State Level Standing Committee (SLSC) has approved a total of 595.822 km of road under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-II. The Committee gave its approval during a meeting on District Rural Road Plan (DRRP) for PMGSY-II, chaired by Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar at Civil Secretariat here on Friday. PMGSY-II roads will cover 23 districts with a total length of 595.822 km. The selection of routes was with objective of identification of rural growth centres and other places of importance. In the meeting, the CS also reviewed in detail about the physical and financial achievement of the PMGSY-I, a release said. Kumar also asked the concerned agency to expedite their works to extend connectivity to the remotest villages of the state. (UNI)
1 kg heroin seized in Mizoram, two arrested
Aizawl: The Mizoram police has seized 1 kg of heroin and arrested two persons for possessing the contraband, a senior police officer said on Friday. The accused were arrested from Tuikhurhlu village near Aizawl on Thursday, the police officer said. The value of the seized contraband is estimated to be around Rs 40 lakh, he said, adding, both the accused were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. They were produced before a special court on Friday which remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days. (PTI)
