SHILLONG: Meghalaya has no dearth of talents, but all the state lacks is the financial resources to support budding talents who are striving to make it to the mainstream and bring laurels to the state.
Fourteen-year-old, Kyrshanlang Dkhar from Pynthorumkhrah is interested in MMA and is often seen practising in the locality.
Coming from a humble background, Dkhar who aspires to become a professional MMA player lacks financial support to help him.
However, the boy is determined and nothing can stop him from achieving his dream. With this aim and objective to make it big in the MMA, Dkhar said that he will beat all odds to earn himself a name in the sport.
On Friday, headman of Pynthorumkhrah Michael Hek came forward and provided the much required financial assistance to the growing talent in MMA.
“He is a boy from our locality and we often find him practising in the trees. He is talented and dedicated to the sport, therefore we from the Dorbar Shnong have decided to help him by providing him the financial support he needs,” a member of the Dorbar Shnong Rocky Hek, who himself is a second Dan black belt in taekwondo, said.
Pointing out that he as a martial artist had himself endured financial constraints, adding that it is quite difficult to pursue a career in sports without financial assistance.
He also said that at a time when drug abuse is on the rise it is of utmost importance to engage the youths in sporting or any other activity of their interest be it dance, cycling etc which can keep them away from all anti-social elements.
Stating that the standard of Manipur is far better than Meghalaya in sports, he urged the government to take initiatives and open up avenues for young talents to grow. “I am grateful to my parents and the Rangbah Shnong for helping me,” Dkhar said. Urging the state government to help and support him, Dkhar said, “My dream is to become a martial artist player and I want to excel in the field and represent the state and the country at the international level.”
Dkhar is a student of Valco Secondary School and will be participating in the Ground and Pound MMA competition starting at the District Library, Nongpoh on Saturday.
