SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in- charge of PWD Prestone Tynsong said the Mawlai by-pass will be converted to a double lane once certain road sections are improved.
Replying to a supplementary question raised by Congress MLA Zenith Sangma during question hour in the Assembly on Friday, Tynsong said the reason that it is still one way is because the junction from Mawiong needs to be improved and there will be a problem if both sides of the traffic are allowed.
There is also the entry point for the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) approach road and the PWD department will meet Transport department officials to discuss the matter.
He added that there is some problem with the land and once the junction is improved, double lane will be allowed.
Tynsong said since the Mawlai bypass road reaches till Mawlai Mawtawar and again from Mawlai Mawtawar it reaches Mawlai PTS, there is a need to improve the road. “Once it is improved we will go for double lane,” he said.
The construction of the Mawlai by-pass was sanctioned on March, 2012. Tynsong said the total length is 5.50 km and black-topped width is 7 meters.
Replying to a supplementary query by Sangma, Tynsong said the revised estimate is Rs 27.87 crore and original sanction was Rs 20 crore.
He said the road was made functional on August 17 and it is made one way.
