SHILLONG: A section of the residents of Mawshut village in Mairang has demanded re-election of Sordar accusing the incumbent, Etalan Myrthong, of “dictatorship.”
Myrthong has been in the post for 20 years. He also allegedly has a case of murder against him.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, former assistant general secretary of the village, Letar L. Mawnai, said that Myrthong along with his two accomplices attacked his home carrying a dao (machete) on Sunday.
Mawnai said that his youngest daughter pleaded with him not to open the door which prompted the miscreants to break open the windows and one of them entered to find him calling the police station for help.
He was saved when a group of Church-goers heard the commotion in their home. However, Myrthong and his accomplices fled into the woods. Mawnai on Sunday filed a complaint against Myrthong.
Mawnai said that Myrthong intended to kill him after he filed an RTI in the Block office, SDO (Civil), Soil department regarding the various works in the village.
Mawnai also alleged that Myrthong had murdered his father-in-law, Artan Hoojon on December 27, 1993.
“At that time, he (Myrthong) came over and said he has murdered somebody and told us to accompany him to bury the body,” Mawnai said.
When pointed out that he was indirectly involved in the murder case since he helped bury the body, Mawnai and the delegation of residents denied.
“He had directed the entire village to go along. We were helpless because if we do not obey his orders, we will be fined Rs 200. Besides, he is known to be the dictator,” Mawnai said.
The Hynniewtrep National People’s Federation (HNPF) also accompanied the residents.
