TURA: Former Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU and ICFAI Prof Milton S Sangma has called to start a journal to facilitate publication of articles, essays and literary works as well as writings on non-literary subjects that can promote the use of A’chik language.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the Writers’ Meet organised by the A’chik Literature Society in collaboration with the Garo Department of NEHU at Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Tura on Saturday.
According to Sangma, the journal would make it easier to promote the works of A’chik writers which in turn would take the language to a higher level.
During the programme, Dominic Megam Sangma, who has made two Garo feature films – ‘Rong’kuchak’ and ‘Ma’ama’ — on A’chik culture and life in A’chik language, was also felicitated by the ALS. The films have bagged national and international awards bringing recognition for Garo films for the first time. A citation was presented to Dominic Sangma in recognition of excellence and also for bringing Garo language and culture for the first time to international focus.
As part of the programme, a book, ‘Ku’akmao Seanirang’ (Writings in Prose 2019) by Crystal Cornelious D Marak, was also released. The book contains ten essays by the author. Altogether, 90 writers and poets also presented their short stories, plays and articles at three different sessions. Students undergoing training in A’”chik traditional musical instruments in the Department of Garo, NEHU Tura Campus, also displayed their skills in playing different rhythms on dama (drum).
