Students want govt help on climate change

SHILLONG: A group of students from the city under the banner of “Friday’s for Future” have come forward to create awareness among the people about the need to protect the dwindling environment and draw the government’s attention on climate change and declare it as an emergency.
Hailing from various schools but standing together for a common the cause, the students are all set to hold a rally on Friday in Shillong with the twin objective of creating awareness about environment besides protesting against the inaction of the government to protect environment.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, a member of the team, Joel Blah Kyndiah, said, “Politicians may die of old age but we will die of climate change if proper action is not taken.”
Asking the government to declare climate emergency like Britain, he added that this will be the second such rally in Shillong; the first was held earlier this year.
The aim of the rally is to create awareness among the people and also register protest against the inaction of the government to address the issue.
The students also said that they may not be voters and may not be appealing to the political parties but their concerns should be taken seriously by the government.
They also suggested that the group earlier had submitted some suggestions to the deputy chief minister to reduce carbon emission but there was no response.
Urging all the schools in the city to use buses which will address many concerns, he also said that walking to office can reduce carbon emission to some extent but the immediate requirement is laws and regulations to check climate change.
