SHILLONG: The headman of Nohwet, Bose Swell Khongthohrem, on Friday asserted that he is still the headman of Nohwet and that claims that he has been removed as headman of the village are baseless.
Addressing a press conference here, he said, “In Nohwet, we do not follow the convention of having an acting traditional head, there is no such acting Rangbah shnong, acting secretary.”
Taking out a handbook containing the constitution of the village, he said, “Nowhere in the constitution is it written that there should be an acting traditional head.”
He added that he will remain the headman till his term ends on May 25, 2021.
Khongthohrem said that a section of the residents who oppose him have decided to hold a dorbar on Saturday while the announcement was made on Thursday. “This is violation of the constitution of the village as for a dorbar, the announcement should be made one week in advance,” Khongthohrem said.
The dorbar is being called by Callington Khonglar who also claims to be the acting Rangbah shnong. “We will raise a slogan that we oppose the dorbar,” Khongthohrem said. Asked about his views on the inclusion of women in the Dorbar, Khongthoh-rem said that women play an important role and with India being a democracy, they must have equal rights.
“In fact, when there is a cleaning drive in the village, it is the women folk who come out in large numbers,” he said.
