SHILLONG: The Shillong Times, Platinum Jubilee Organising Committee led Operation CleanUp is moving to Police Bazar on Saturday, September 28, 2019 for the 5th Phase of the cleaning drive schedule for 9 am to 11 am.
The Committee has decided to dedicate two Saturdays a month to cleaning up rivers and two other Saturdays to clean up other areas of Shillong.
The Clean Shillong message has picked up significantly and different groups are now voluntarily cleaning up different parts of the city.
Groups that have been consistently on the move to clean up Shillong and its suburbs on a daily basis include those from City Hut Dhaba, Jiva, Deja Vu and Bamboo Hut.
On Saturday, Operation CleanUp with about 300 volunteers will branch out in different directions around the Police Bazar area from Keatinge Road, Jail Road, Quinton Road and the main thoroughfare leading down to Dreamland Cinema.
The team will also survey the stream behind Keatinge Road that flows all the way down to Umsohsun which has become a dumping ground for garbage and also sewerage emptied from the business establishments alongside the stream.
Operation CleanUp believes in creating mass awareness about the evils of single use plastics which have clogged our drains, streams and rivers and which have defaced our living environment.
The Committee encourages every individual and group that share the same concern to join hands in this and other clean-up drives organised from time to time. The Committee also believes that it is only when every citizen is committed to a cleaner Shillong then change is possible.
