Mawkyrwat: Mawkyrwat MLA and MIDC chairman Renikton L Tongkhar said that ‘‘clean India would be the greatest gift that we give to the father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birthday’’.
Tongkhar was speaking as the chief guest during a programme commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, organised by the office of the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District in collaboration with different departments.
Tongkhar stated that plastic has made many things convenient for the people but has now become a threat to the environment as well as human life.
He congratulated the villagers for organising cleaning drives and spoke about his experience in Bhutan where people keep their rivers clean.
He also called upon the people to emulate the same attitude so that tourists will be able to imbibe the same attitude when it comes to cleanliness.
Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo congratulated the government officials, myntri and headmen of different villages, students, Swachhagrahis, Self Help Groups and all involved in the Swatch Bharat mission campaign adding that the award she received was a result of their hard work and cooperation.
‘Plastic has made life so convenient that we have stopped thinking of alternatives to solve the problem of plastic menace,’ Laloo said.
She stated that ideas should come from students, ordinary people and SHGs when it comes to creating awareness on the eradication or recycling of plastic.
Meanwhile, Block Development Officer, Mawkyrwat Block R Kharbihkhiew said, “There should be a behavioral change in each one of us and we should avoid apathy”.
“We should inculcate a habit of cleanliness in us and our younger generation,” he said.
“Cleanliness is a service and one person with a determined heart can change the world. Therefore we should cultivate an attitude of refuse, reuse and recycle,” he added.
