Swachhta Hi Seva in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong: The District Swachh Bharat Mission, East Jaintia Hills organised a ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ programme on the theme ‘plastic waste management’ at the Deputy Commissioner’s office campus on Wednesday as part of Gandhi Jayanti.
East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner FM Dopth attended the programme as the chief guest.
In his address to the gathering, Dopth informed that the campaign aims at promoting cleanliness and to create awareness about sanitation among the people.
He also informed that solid and liquid waste management activities have been implemented in the district and that toilets have been provided to each and every household in order to achieve the open defecation free status.
He also pointed out that plastic is the main cause of environmental pollution which needs to be stopped in order to protect the environment.
“There are 21 villages in the district that have taken up the plastic waste management activities during the month long Swachhta Hi Seva campaign and altogether 751 kgs of plastic waste have be collected from these villages which will be sent to cement plants in the district for conversion into other useful materials” he added. Dopth also called upon the people to take concrete measures in eliminating plastic waste and to put into practice cleanliness in order to keep the surroundings clean.
The district Swachh Bharat Mission also conducted a cleaning drive in the district from Dkhiah to Byndihati led by the deputy commissioner, along with other district officers.
Government employees also carried out cleaning drives within their respective office premises.
