USTM begins ‘I Can I Will Academy’

GUWAHATI: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has introduced an all-new flexible courses. “I Can I Will Academy” meant for the differently abled persons with a flexible curriculum and examination system.
This flexible system will also apply for the students with sports and culture expertise. The curriculum includes both UG and PG courses. It was launched at the Guwahati Press Club on Friday by USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque and Dr Mridul Hazarika, Principal Advisor to USTM.
Addressing media persons at a press conference, Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said, “Students who want to excel in sports and culture as well as those who are physically challenged face a lot of inconvenience in attending regular classes and appearing in examinations. Considering this fact, USTM has designed a flexible curriculum and examination system so that they can join all the competitions and training sessions at the State, National and International level.”
He said that students having expertise in sports and culture and also the physically challenged ones will get free education and other facilities at the University. The classes for these courses will begin from 5th November 2019, he added.
Dr Mridul Hazarika stated that the “I Can, I Will Academy” has been launched with the objective to provide training in various fields suitable to the differently abed students, including sports and culture. Moreover, USTM will provide facilities of sports, counseling, coaching for competitive examinations and skill based training for their career. The engagement of these enthusiastic youths would also be taken care by the University. The University has also offered free stay and food for the poor and deserving students, he added. The achievers in the field of sports and culture are most welcome to pursue the flexible course at USTM free of cost, he added.
The Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts courses include: English, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Social Work, Rural Development, Education and Business Administration. Twelfth pass and graduate students in any discipline securing 45% of marks in aggregate can apply for the UG and PG courses. For reserved category students, 5% marks would be relaxed. There is a special facility for students who passed HSLC to undergo a 3-year Diploma (bridge course) to make them eligible for BA courses. Preference would be given to students who have achieved awards in sports or cultural competitions in the State, National and International level.
The Ph.D programme will be offered in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Academy is a part of the social outreach programme of USTM and will give emphasis on sports and culture.
