SHILLONG: More than 82000 households in Meghalaya do not have power supply as per the 2011 census.
This is revealed in the statistical handbook of Meghalaya, 2019 by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.
The statistics said that in 2001, electricity was available in 179597 households and electricity in 2011 is available in 245355 households meaning 45.58 per cent of the households in the state have electricity.
The census 2011 reveals that massive 93.6 per cent of the rural population still uses firewood for cooking.
As per the 2011 census, 425353 households in the state including 395409 households in rural areas used firewood for cooking, adding as many as 12355 households including 2935 households in rural areas used coal lignite charcoal.
Similarly, 63768 households including 10783 in rural areas used LPG while a majority of them (52985) are in urban areas.
Kerosene is used in 20050 households for cooking and surprisingly, majority of such houses (17166) are in urban areas.
Biogas is also being used by 991 households in the state including 549 in rural areas and 442 in urban areas.
The report also says that 135460 households have radio, transistors followed by 181191 households which have television.
According to 2011 census, there were 8079 computers/laptops with internet connection in the state and the number of the same gadget without internet is 32793.
It also added that 231409 households in the state had telephones while 71766 households have bicycles.
On the other hand 28858 households have scooter, motor cycle and Moped.
