MAWKYRWAT: Ahead of the upcoming council by-election in Ranikor, former president of UDP South West Khasi Hills and president of UDP Ranikor Circle, G.G Bung Snaitang has decided not to associate with the party after the completion of his tenure in March next year.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Snaitang said that his dream of seeing UDP as a winning party in Ranikor constituency has been fulfilled after the party got both MLA and MDC after the 2018 & 2019 elections respectively and therefore it is a perfect time for him to leave the party at the end of his tenure, but he assured to support the local MLA, Pius Marwein. Snaitang has also decided to resign as the Secretary of the UDP central body.
In a letter to the supporters and colleagues of UDP Ranikor, Snaitang said, “Friends, I take this opportunity to bring to your notice that as I have declared during my public campaigns in the last council elections that I will not continue to be a member of the party at any post and level after my tenure ends as the president of Ranikor Circle. I am also going to resign as the Secretary, UDP central body soon.”
Snaitang, who had said in the past public meetings that he will not abandon the party until the UDP in Ranikor is successful, reminded his supporters that he is honouring his words by not leaving the party when it faced the downfall in the last few years.
“Together with you all, I have sacrificed in reviving the party when it almost hit rock bottom as my senior leader K. Lyngkhoi had left the party and P. K. Raswai (former MLA) had passed away, but I have publicly promised that I would not leave UDP till M M Danggo of NPP (Ex-MLA) is defeated and until the party emerges successful. And through our collective dedication and commitment the UDP has created history to get both MLA and MDC seats,” Snaitang said.
However, Snaitang has assured the party workers that he will continue to support Marwein.
