SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Shillong city, has condemned the Meghalaya Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers & Street Vendors Association for marching towards the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
In a statement issued here, the president of the HYC, Shillong City, John Lyngdoh said that members of the association marched towards the KHADC blindly asserting that the sudden move was an act of personal interest.
He added that according to information provided to the HYC, the street vendors association felt agitated following the steps taken by the KHADC to conduct checking of non-tribal vendors in GS Road.
The HYC also took note of the demand made by the association to issue trading licenses to non-tribal vendors in a transparent manner and without partiality.
To this, the HYC questioned the reason behind their plea to issue trading licenses to non-tribal hawkers and said that the tribal hawkers are being misled by the non-tribals.
On the other hand, Lyngdoh said that the HYC supports the decision to collect information and to issue forms to the tribal vendors as this will help them and prevent others from claiming their space as well as to prevent Benami.
