Advisory against buying stolen items
SHILLONG: The Office of the Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills, has urged general public to not purchase second hand products especially electronic devices like mobile phones, ipads, laptops, televisions, etc. from any unauthorised person, dealer or any individual as they might have obtained the items illegally which is punishable as per law for receiving of stolen property. It further requested people to intimate the nearest police station on having knowledge of persons engaged in selling stolen articles or products. The name(s) of informant will be kept confidential.
NGOs clarify on walk-out
SHILLONG: The Mothers’ Union Tura and All A’chik Citizens’ Forum, in a statement issued here on Monday, have clarified with regard to walking out from the meeting called by the Secretary of the Select Committee of Codification of Garo Customary Law on Monday. The organisations have said that due to in-appropriate way of invitation and sudden change of venue not made known to the invitees they did not attend the meeting. The statement mentioned that there was no agenda for the meeting and that the content of the bill was not revealed based on which assent could have been given. The chairperson also claimed to have got the consensus unanimously in their previous meeting held on 2017 which is misrepresentation of the fact, it stated. It further stated that only 15 NGOs of Garo Hills were invited for the meeting and the original members of the codification committee were also not present. The organisations said that the agenda of the meeting was only shared with the secretaries and presidents of various NGOs.
State troupe performs in Manipur
SHILLONG: The cultural troupe led by Silbi Passah recently took part in the Manipur ‘Discover North East’ event which was organised by NEZCC from October 25 to 27. The group performed a dance called ‘Chad choh kba’ which is a harvest dance of the people of Meghalaya.
2-day natl seminar from today
SHILLONG: A two-day National Seminar on “The changing dynamics of Tribal Society with reference to the North Eastern Region” organised by the Department of Sociology and IQAC of Shillong College will kick off at the Conference Hall of the college on Tuesday. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has been invited to grace Tuesday’s programme as the chief guest and Kyrmen Shylla, Minister of Social Welfare as the guest of honour. The valedictory programme, which will be held on Wednesday at 1 pm, will be presided over by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui as the chief guest while Prof David Syiemlieh, former Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar and former Chairman UPSC will be the guests of honour.
Association condoles death of members
SHILLONG: Members of the Gorkha Secondary School Alumni Association, in an executive meeting held on Sunday, observed two minutes of silence as a mark of respect for (L) Namgyal Lama, son of B Lama who was an alumnus of Gorkha Secondary School (then known as Gorkha High School). Namgyal passed away on October 22 at his residence in Riatsohkhlur, Upper Shillong. The members also paid their respects to (L) Laxmi Poon, daughter of (L) Tek Bahadur Pun and Kusum Pun who was a former teacher of Gorkha Secondary School. Laxmi passed away on October 23 in Delhi.
110th Devkota Jayanti observed
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Nepali Sahitya Sammelan, Shillong celebrated the 110th Birth Anniversary of Nepali poet Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota on Sunday. Krishna Chauhan and Shraddha Pradhan were the chief guest and the guest of honor respectively for the programme. The Sammelan felicitated four writers and the poets, viz. Divya Devi Subedi, Hari Prasad Joshi Dhakal, Ram Shah and Bishal KC.
BSF seizes 50 heads of cattle
SHILLONG: The Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills has informed that the BSF personnel of Hawaitilla BOP have seized 50 heads of cattle in separate incidents recently while patrolling along the International Border falling under Muktapur PP jurisdiction. The BSF recovered 12, 2, 3 and 33 heads of cattle on October 22, 23, 24 and 26 respectively. The SP has requested the owners or anyone who has knowledge of recent cattle theft to approach Muktapur PPP (7005394478 / 6909506865) at the earliest for further necessary action.
Teachers’ body to hold meeting
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers Association (MUPSTA), South West Khasi Hills District Unit Mawkyrwat will hold its general meeting at the Kashari U Syiem Maharam, Mawkyrwat on Thursday from 11 am. The meeting will discuss various issues on strengthening the operations of the organisation in the whole district, E.G War, organising-cum-publicity secretary, MUPSTA, state level, said in a statement issued here. The leaders from the state will also present in the meeting.The association has requested all upper primary teachers (improved and ad hoc) to attend the meeting without fail.
