SHILLONG: The elected Ward Commissioner of Shillong Cantonment Board, Vikash Gupta, who was recently arrested on rape charges, has been sent to judicial custody. Gupta was arrested on Saturday after which the Investigation Officer sought just a day’s police custody for interrogation, which surprised many as the charges are of very serious nature.
Later, he was produced again in the court which remanded him in judicial custody. Gupta was allegedly found clicking selfies in the lock-up in Sadar Police Station but police said the photos were clicked outside.
The accused was arrested after the mother of the 18-year-old victim reported to the police that her daughter was raped by the accused in the city on November 6. The incident came to light after the victim consumed phenyl in an attempt to commit suicide and was admitted at Woodland Hospital on November 7. Following the report, the victim was medically examined at the hospital.
Police also said the victim is an ex-employee of Gupta.
Meanwhile, the All Shillong Nepali Mahila Samity has condemned the act. The Samity has extended support to the girl and her family. It has requested the law enforcement agencies, courts and all authorities to take speedy action against the accused.
