Home Minister warns of action against miscreants

SHILLONG: Citizens of Shillong are living under fear after several cases of assault on pedestrians by yet-to-be identified miscreants in the past 20-25 days even as Home Minister James Sangma has promised strong against the perpetrators. Police informed that around two weeks back, they had received reports from Rangbah Shnong about assault on passersby at Umsohsun and the matter was reported by the Rangbah Shnong.
Prior to that, similar incidents were reported in Lower Jail Road and a case was also registered.
On November 7, two college students were assaulted at Umsohsun near Lahkreh School by a group of 8/9 miscreants.
The assailants also took away the bag of one of the boys. The victim suffered minor injuries.
Prior to this, a group of miscreants assaulted a few persons at GS Road near Grand Hotel Point, near Roopkala tailoring, Umsohsun.
On Monday evening, there was a report of a boy being assaulted at Umsohsun.
In some cases, police after reviewing the CCTV footage, deployed additional police personnel in the area where such assaults have taken place.
Police sources also said that sector officers need to take more preventive measures to ensure that such cases do not recur.
When contacted, Home Minister James Sangma said that the government will not tolerate such kinds of assaults on people. “Police department is going to be firm and strict on this matter. Anybody found to be engaging in such activities no matter who are they will face firm action”, the home minister said.
Sangma also asked people to come forward and lodge complaints with police about cases of assaults.
