SHILLONG: The general secretary of the UDP, Jemino Mawthoh, observed that Administrator’s Rule should be promulgated in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in order to set things right in the council and to not allow political opportunism.
It may be mentioned that the Executive Committee (EC) led by UDP MDC Teinwell Dkhar was toppled on Wednesday following voting by division.
The ruling and the opposition drew a tie with 14 votes but it was the vote of the Chairman of the KHADC, PN Syiem that dampened the spirits of the ruling coalition.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, he said that the council has performed well on a number of sensitive issues and working well with the coalition partners, especially, the NPP.
“It is unfortunate that some unwanted elements want to disrupt and disturb the stability of the government. These people should be removed from the governance process because they are a hindrance for things to move forward”, he said.
He said that the UDP has always stood for unity and stability which are the traits of good governance and expressed his concern that there are those who want to destabilise the functioning of the KHADC.
He went on to say that the UDP family is intact while other political parties do not appear to be so.
In this regard, he appealed to the other political parties to maintain discipline. “It is very rare for the UDP MDCs to switch parties or jump over to another party but such matters are found in other parties. Since our party is intact, we appeal to other coalition partners to keep their house in order and maintain discipline”, Mawthoh said.
He said that such disruptions do not augur well for the state of Meghalaya.
