MTDC initiates cost-cutting measures

Rs 2 crore saved by corporation annually

SHILLONG: The chairman of Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) , Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday submitted a performance report of MTDC Ltd to Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma in which he claimed that the challenges towards compilation of pending accounts for the last several years has been overcome.
In the report, Shullai said that several cost cutting measures including legal fees and outsourcing of annual maintenance contract by non- locals have been stopped. Local youths have been engaged to achieve the same, adding the cost of Rs 2 crore has been saved by the corporation annually.
He also said that additional cost cutting measures to minimise leakages have been taken up by the Board to enable the corporation to achieve a goal of additional Rs 2 crore by 2020. The South Shillong MLA also said that they are trying to increase the hotel occupancy and online booking will start soon for which the department has launched its website.
Stating that a vision document is being prepared for the corporation, he added that they have set a target of Rs 100 crore within a period of 20 years.
“ The vision document will be completed in January 2020,” he said, adding the MTDC is going to create four more units by way of inviting expression of interest to increase revenue and will create 500 jobs by the end of 2020.
He said that the present turnover of the MTDC is Rs 20 crore and the target turnover has been kept to Rs 40 crore by the end of 2023, adding the concept note on tribal tourism has also been submitted to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to build Orchid Hotel.
