SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) president Lamphrang Kharbani said the identity of the indigenous people should be protected in the face of threat in the form of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
Speaking at a function to celebrate eleven years of its existence, he observed the culture and identity seems to be slipping away if CAB is implemented in the State.
Meanwhile, Congress MDC Carness Sohshang from Mawkyrwat said that if CAB is implemented, South West Khasi Hills, Dawki and a few pockets in East Khasi Hills will be the first ones to bear the brunt of the CAB.
On the other hand, the organization of Poor People’s Movement (PPM) was dissolved and the organization merged itself with HANM.
President of PPM, Louis Dohtdong said the different organisations of the state should come and stand united as one. Stating that there has been mushrooming of social organizations, he said that the presence of many organisations often leads to a division in the indigenous communities. “There are some organizations who have 15-20 members and are formed with vested interest and to earn money. Other organizations should come to an understanding and stand united”, he said.
