Thousands peaceful protesters arrested in Guwahati

Internet services remain suspended in Assam; Curfew relaxed till 9 pm in Guwahati
GUWAHATI: Over 2000 protesters including top leader of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) were arrested by police in the city after they had gathered a Latasil playground here to stage satyagraha (peaceful demonstration) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enacted by the BJP-led NDA government in the Centre on December 11.
The agitators all over Brahmaputra Valley districts in Assam had come out on Monday in response to the call of the AASU to stage satyagraha demanding withdrawal of the CAA. They were supposed to agitate before the respective Deputy Commissioner’s office.
In Guwahati, agitators who had gathered at Latasil playground here, came out in groups of 100 persons each and proceeded towards office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (metropolitan) district chanting slogans against CAA and waving placard.
However, the peaceful agitators were prevented by police from proceeding towards the DC’s office and detained. They were then confined to the open space on the bank of Dighalipukhuri tank in the heart of the city. They were then released after an hour at around 1.00 PM.
Top AASU leaders including the adviser, Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharrya, general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi were among the arrested agitators on Monday. Peaceful mass agitators were also arrested in other parts of the state too.
Meanwhile, ban on internet service has been extended by the authority by another 24 hours till Tuesday night I view of the prevailing situation.  The internet services in Assam has remained suspended since December 11 last.
Curfew has been relaxed for 15 hours in Guwahati from 6 AM to 9 PM on Monday while Rapid Action Force personnel of the CRPF have been deployed in the city.
