Launch of special summary revision of photo electoral rolls

Shillong/TURA: The state-level launch of the Special Summary Revision of Photo Electoral Rolls was held on Monday at the Conference Room, Deputy Commissioner’s Office, in the city. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor attended the programme as the chief guest while District Election Officer (DEO), EKH, M War Nongbri was the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Kharkongor said that EPIC is an undeniable proof that a person is a genuine citizen of the state. He called upon political parties to impress upon the public to get them enrolled in the electoral rolls.
Further, he urged upon political parties to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLA) in facilitating enrolment of new voters and help them in filing claims and objections so that the people of the state are not denied the right to vote.
He said the state has 19,09,686 electorates with projected electorates of 19,72,582 in 2020.
Kharkongor also said that majority of the 62,896 are people who are yet to get enrolled fall between 18 and 19 years of age, adding that through the special summary revision, “we can get them enrolled in the electoral rolls.”
Nongbri, on the other hand, said that the summary revision of Photo Electoral Rolls is an exercise to ensure that genuine citizens are not left behind. She said that the aim of the summary revision is to ensure that new voters are enrolled in the Photo Electoral Rolls.
The special summary revision is also to ensure accuracy and completeness of Photo Electoral Rolls, correcting entry in the rolls and improving the quality and accuracy of e-Rolls.
The CEO and DEO also distributed CDs containing Draft Electoral Rolls to representatives of different political parties during the programme.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner (Election), West Garo Hills, Ram Singh on Monday handed over the draft electoral rolls with reference to January 1, 2020 as the qualifying date and elector’s verification programme to representatives of political parties at the DC office in Tura.
