NONGSTOIN: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), an umbrella of various pressure groups of the state including West Khasi Hills staged a protest over the Citizenship Amendment Act in Nongstoin on Wednesday.
Activists of CoMSO began their protest rally from Nondein bridge up to Nongstoin market where they shouted slogans against the Act.
The activists also gathered at Nongstoin market where they raised slogans against the CAA and introduction of ILP.
CoMSO chairman, Robertjune Kharjahrin said that if the Central Government had assured the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Manipur it should also extend it to Meghalaya or else they will have to chase away the illegal immigrants who enter our land. He added that earlier even the Congress party did not support to implement the ILP in the state but now they have agreed to implement it and this shows the winning of the Meghalaya people. He further said that he would rather live in jail than his homeland if CAA is implemented and ILP is set aside.
Meanwhile, Kharjahrin stated that we all know the Sixth Schedule does not have any regulation to protect people from the unabated influx. But ILP can shield the indigenous people from being overwhelmed by immigrants.
WKSU president, D Sun said that the Act seeks to amend the definition of illegal immigrants for Hindus, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh which will be a threat to the indigenous of North East India especially Meghalaya.
Other speakers include WYF President Mawkordor Kharsyiemlieh, President HANM, Hamar Lyngkhoi, president HYC Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh, leader of HNYF among others.
