NEW DELHI: Shillong MP Vincent Pala has urged the state government to invite the Jesuits, a religious order, to open a university in Meghalaya with the latest curriculum.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, Pala said that historically, Shillong has been the educational capital of the North East.
“With the world progressing at a tremendous pace, and given the need for our children to stand on a par with their counterparts from other parts of the country and from around the world, it is important that we continue to try to provide them with opportunities for specialized quality education within the state. Our state has made tremendous progress in the area of tertiary education,” he said in his letter.
The Jesuits, also known as the Society of Jesus, run Loyola College in Williamnagar in West Garo Hills district and are in the process of establishing another college, St. Xavier’s, in the South West Khasi Hills district near Mawkyrwat. They are an internationally reputed organisation in the field of tertiary education and professional education, and even run some of the best educational institutions in India.
Their emphasis on quality education while preserving the local culture makes them unique, Pala said. “Given the expertise that this organisation has in the field of higher education, I am confident that they will be a real asset to the state, “ he added.
