GUWAHATI: The All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) has urged the Centre to initiate the appeals process for persons excluded in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) besides issuing national identity cards to persons included in the final NRC.
In a memorandum, the students’ union requested the concerned officials to issue national identity cards (NIC) to the persons included in the final NRC published on August 31, 2019 as per provisions of the Section.14A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 read with Rule.13 of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.
Besides, the union urged the concerned authority to initiate the appeals process for the persons excluded from the final NRC according to provision of the Paragraph.8 of the Schedule appended to Rule.4A of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.
According to the provision of Paragraph 8, “any person not satisfied with the outcome of the decisions of the claims and objections may prefer appeal, before the designated Tribunal constituted under the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1964, within a period of 60 days from the date of such order, and or the disposal of appeal by the Tribunals the names shall be included or deleted, as the case may be, in the National Register of Indian Citizens in the state of Assam.”
“We have submitted the memorandum to the Union home secretary and joint home secretary (North East in-charge) and Registrar General of India on Monday. The additional Registrar General of India assured us to look into our demands shortly. Another memorandum was submitted to the Assam chief secretary and NRC coordinator today,” AAMSU advisor Azizur Rahman told The Shillong Times here on Wednesday.
