SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday said that the state government is still examining whether there is a need to convene any special session for the election of the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
“We are currently examining the matter. The government will accordingly prepare a letter and call a cabinet meeting to recommend to the Governor what we feel most appropriate,” Sangma told reporters here.
The MDCs, who belong to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) recently met him and submitted the signatures of all the MDCs who are supporting the alliance, he added.
“We felt that now the situation may be feasible to call for an election and allow them to decide since the council is a democratically elected institution”, he said.
The MDCs have the right to form the Executive Committee and also elect its new CEM to lead the council, he added.
The state government is equally concerned of the fact that the district council at present is not functioning in a proper manner, and the MDCs are continuously switching from one side to another, he said.
‘Keeping in mind the situation we had proposed that Administrator’s Rule should be put in. But then Governor had not taken any call on the recommendation”, he added.
