SHILLONG: BJP leader Ernest Mawrie, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2018 Assembly polls from Nongthymmai constituency, was elected as state president of the party here on Wednesday.
The state returning officer, JA Lyngdoh, declared Mawrie as the state president after completion of the election.
Union Minister for Animal Husbandry, Sanjeev Kumar Balyanji, and the party’s national secretary in charge of Tripura, Sunil Deodhar, were present as observers.
Speaking to media persons after being elected, Mawrie said that his priority will be to focus on the development of the state as there are several central schemes being implemented.
“We have to follow up and ensure that the benefits reach people”, he said.
Deodar earlier said that the BJP is the only democratic party which conducts organisational elections under observation of the Central Election Commission.
Informing that there were other aspirants for the post as people come into politics to fulfill the aspirations of the people, he added that the party does justice to all and appeasement to none.
“We are working by taking everyone together,” he claimed.
The name of Mawrie as the state president was proposed by senior party leader, AL Hek, and seconded by David Kharsati before he was unanimously elected.
The party is expecting good performance in the 2023 Assembly elections as it will contest under the leadership of Mawrie.
