Car convoy rally of traffic violators around town

JOWAI: In pursuance of a nation-wide endeavour towards impressing on drivers and public awareness of traffic rules and road safety norms, the Jowai Traffic Branch, supervised by the Superintendent of Police of the district, L. Syiem, MPS, on Saturday, organised a programme in a little different way and gave the National Road Safety Week, being observed in all states across the country, a memorable conclusion.
The event was hosted by officers in-charge of the police traffic branch, Jowai at Iawmusiang, a focal part of the District Headquarter, and participated by participants representing the transport department and the Jowai Local Taxi Association.
A few moments preceding to the starting of the programme, a drive was initiated by the traffic personnel with spotters placed at certain points on the road to watch and look for drivers violating road safety norms, wherein about fifty drivers spotted and detained for driving without seat belts put on or the ones using mobile phone while driving.
An interesting twist to the event is the unusual action taken by the traffic policemen to make the observation of the National Road Safety Week more memorable, and of course, unforgettable, for that matter, to the detained traffic violators, who were made to sit as audience at the event and to listen to counseling and lectures as well as to participate in a car convoy rally around the town of Jowai led by the police car at the front, instead of giving them challans and made them pay fines.
Lectures were given to the violators, and the public participants and passersby, on basic principles of road safety and the need to observe traffic rules for the sake of public safety and convenience by the Dy. Superintendent of Police (Traffic) D. Moksha and the in-charge of the traffic branch, Pohshna, Inspector, as well as by a representative from the transport department for general awareness and public vigil.
The event concluded with the distribution of pamphlets and a procession tour, around the town, made of a convoy of fifty cars of traffic violators led in a train by the in-charge of traffic.
