SHILLONG: : The Women’s Empowerment Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will meet on Monday to discuss the alleged rape of the 14-year-old girl on the night of January 29.
“We are going as the committee to discuss this case. We will also decide to summon the police officials and doctors of Ganesh Das Hospital who are treating the minor girl,” said Congress legislator and chairperson of the committee Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh visited the girl in the hospital and met her relatives on Saturday.
Lyngdoh also took a strong exception to the claim that it was ‘consensual’ and not rape.
“I am surprised as to how it can be ‘consensual’ since the girl is a minor. Anything not permissible by law should be punished. I will not allow this to happen,” the chairman said.
She also slammed the police for refusing to register the complaint when the mother had gone to the police station for filing a missing case.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh said the girl had identified the person who dragged her into the vehicle. According to her, the girl is emotionally and psychologically affected by the incident.
“I am not satisfied with the care she was provided. I thought the counselor should be present in the hospital to counsel her,” Lyngdoh said.
The girl was drugged and allegedly raped and dumped by miscreants at Madanrting Bazar. She had gone out from her home the previous day with a friend who is a driver of SPTS bus. Her friend gave her Rs 30 for boarding a vehicle late in the evening.
As she struggled to get a vehicle, she started walking only to be kidnapped by four masked persons who were in a pick-up vehicle. She tried to ask for help but was gagged using her shawl. They also threatened to kill her if she discloses the incident to anyone.
The person who started the assault, also strangled the girl and she again fell unconscious. Thinking that she is dead, she was thrown in Madanrting Bazar where the police found her.
