SHILLONG: UDP MDC Paul Lyngdoh and Independent member Teiborlang Pathaw from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have extended support to the KHADC CEM Latiplang Kharkongor.
The joint letter addressed to the CEM, submitted by the two MDCs on Sunday, said that they are extending support due to the prevailing crisis and impasse in the Council and the need to bring back the administration on track for the larger interests of the council.
They were both Executive Members in the previous UDA-led EC.
With this, the strength of United Democratic Forum (UDF) has gone upto 16.
Earlier, speculation was rife about some MDCs of the UDA and UDF coming together.
Further, sources said that there are ongoing talks between some MDCs of the UDA and UDF to form a new EC. The UDA has been in power for 8 months after being ousted by UDF.
However, the CEM has denied this by saying that there has been no attempt to have a new EC.
Kharkongor, who is heading the UDF, had earlier petitioned the High Court on the delay by the Governor to approve the list of Executive Members.
The court has asked the governor to approve the appointment of EMs recently.
In response to the argument that the UDF EC is in minority, he said the matter can be resolved on the floor of the House and said it was up to the governor to convene a special session or to wait for the main session in March to have a floor test.
