SHILLONG: The state government is working on solutions to resume coal mining in the state even as it is focusing on mining plans by taking experts on board.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, a government official said, “We are working on the mining plan. There are people who will help in preparing the mining plan and for what kind of mining methods to be adopted, the experts will have to be consulted”.
The All Jaintia Cement and Clinker Transporters Association has questioned the government over the Supreme Court order of July 3, 2019 on resumption of coal mining and transportation in the state. The official said the government is holding discussion with the technical persons before finalising the modalities.
“We are working to find solution to resume mining, it will take time”, the official said adding that the environment and forest clearance among others are mandatory and it is a long process. Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) has started some of the drilling works in Khliehriat and Sutnga. The CMPDI started the drilling works for exploration before coming up with the mining plan.
The official said if it is successful in Khliehriat and Sutnga it will be replicated in other blocks. The official said that the government has identified three blocks in Garo Hills, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills. Further, as the rat-hole mining is no longer possible, the official said that new technique of mining which is scientific and economical is being prepared to ensure that mining methods are safe for the environment and the labourers.
