GUWAHATI: Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman, Arvind Singh reviewed various projects and operations of airports in the Northeast at the AAI regional headquarters here on Wednesday.
Airport directors from the major Northeastern region including Guwahati, Agartala, Imphal, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Jorhat, Shillong and Dimapur took part in the review meet and appraised Singh about the present status and the future prospects of their airports.
The review meet emphasised on enhancing the existing passenger facilities at the airport and planning for the future expansion of the terminal buildings.
Apart from interacting with airport directors and senior officials of major airports in the Northeastern Region, Singh met Assam chief secretary, Kumar Sanjay Krishna and discussed several aviation-related infrastructure and upcoming projects in the state.
The meeting focused on enhancing more cargo facilities for the benefit of farmers and scope for agri-business in the state as well as the adjoining areas.
The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport here is considered the gateway to the north eastern states and a major hub for export of local products and the tourism.
“The passenger movement at the LGBI Airport has already crossed the six million mark in 2019 and within the first half of next year, we are aiming at expanding the figure to 15 million passengers,” Singh told reporters later.
He said that considering its significance, the AAI is constructing a world class new integrated passenger terminal building at the airport here which will be equipped with modern and world-class facilities.
The new airport building is expected to be operational by 2021.
The AAI chairman also visited the construction site of the airport terminal building and reviewed the progress of the project. He was accompanied by J.T Radhakrishna, general manager and project in-charge of the airport who briefed him about the salient features and future-ready terminal building.
